New Purpose Bred Triticale
The Pork CRC has been investing in the University of Sydney triticale breeding program, with the aim of selecting varieties more closely suited to the feed-grain needs of the Australian pig industry.
Waratah Seed Co Ltd. is commercialising Berkshire, the first triticale variety to come out of that partnership.
A few commercial crops of Berkshire were grown in 2009. Following further pig feeding tests currently being undertaken, Berkshire will become widely available for the 2010 season for growers associated with the pork industry. Berkshire is subject to an End Point Royalty on all grain produced.
Berkshire has
- consistently high yield
- high ileal digestible energy
- low fibre content
Further triticale lines are being field tested for release for with Waratah Seed Co Ltd. in the coming years.
Area Based Royalty
Waratah Seed Co Ltd has developed an alternative to the End Point Royalty system used to collect levies for investment into plant breeding. The Area Based Royalty currently applies to Endeavour and Tobruk triticale. The aim is to directly support the triticale breeding program that is supporting your production system.
